T-levels and industry placements

T Levels and Industry placements in the Heart of the South West are new qualifications coming in September 2020, which will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work.

What are T-Levels?

T-levels are one of the core three options available to students once they have completed their GCSE’s and are the equivalent to 3 A levels. They run over two years and are a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on the job’ experience.

To ensure that the courses meet the needs of industry they have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses ensuring that their content is current and relevant. Students undertake at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days) in an industry placement, enabling students to gain invaluable work based skills.

T-level key facts:

  • 80% classroom and 20% in meaningful industry placements
  • Equivalents to 3 A Levels (same number of UCAS point)
  • Focuses on vocational skills
  • 45-days of on the the job experience
  • 24 subjects will become available over the next 3 years (starting September 2020)

How do T Levels fit with other post-16 choices?

Once a young person has completed their GCSE’s they will be able to make a clear choice by either selecting an academic or technical/vocational path.

How do T-level courses work

  • 1800 hours over 2 years (with Flexibility)
  • Outline content set by T Level Panel and approved by Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

Approx. 900-1400 hours

When will they start?

The first T-Levels will start in September 2020 at selected post-16 learning providers (colleges and schools) with more courses being offered in the years that follow. This means pupils who entered year 10 in September 2018 will be the first to be able to study them.

The first courses to be offered are:

      • Digital Production, Design and Development
      • Design, Surveying and Planning
      • Education

In time, there will be T-Levels in subjects ranging from Accountancy through to Science.

From September 2020 the following colleges will be the first in the Heart of the South West to offer students T-level qualifications.
